More children and parents in Barnet can learn about healthy eating and exercise after a popular weight management programme opened its doors in five new locations within the Borough.
Alive N Kicking is a child weight management programme which was first introduced in the Borough in May this year. The 12 week course aims to help children aged 4 to 12 years old reach and maintain a healthier weight through behaviour change, nutrition, portion control and exercise.
The programme is now available at: Parkfield Primary School, Mondays 3.45 – 5pm ; All Saint’s Church of England, Wednesdays 4.30 – 6pm; Goldbeaters Primary School, Thursdays 4.30 – 6pm; Deansbrook Junior School, Thursdays 3.45 – 5pm; Orion Gold Star Centre, Saturdays 10:30 -11:45 (from 3rd October).
On average, in Barnet 1 in every 5 children (21.0 per cent) in reception and 1 in every 3 children in year 6 (34.4 per cent) are either overweight or obese. Barnet has relatively similar statistics compared to the rest of England where 22.5 per cent of the children in reception and 33.5 per cent of children in year 6 are measured as either overweight or obese.
Councillor Helena Hart, Chairman of the Health and Wellbeing Board, said: “Prevention is always so much better than cure in avoiding illness and disease so I am delighted to see that this service is going to be available in more areas in Barnet. It’s so important for families to be able to obtain the information, advice and support they need to make the changes necessary for them to lead healthier lives .”
