Omonia’s hopes of a cash injection ahead of next season receded yesterday when negotiations with FC Sion over the sale of Demetris Christofi broke down.
“Omonia announce that the negotiations with Swiss club Sion for the potential transfer of Demetris Christofi has fallen through”, read a club announcement yesterday afternoon. “Today [yesterday] a meeting took place between both chairmen in Nicosia during which Sion appeared to deviate from the preliminary agreement concerning the time frame of payment.”
According to media reports, Omonia and Sion had reportedly agreed that the entire fee for the sale of the player would be paid up front but when controversial Sion chairman, Christian Constantin, arrived in Cyprus, he informed his counterpart Stelios Mylonas that they wanted to pay the fee in instalments.
The fee is reported to be around €1m.
