COVID-19 can only be handled effectively through vaccination, Health Ministry urges citizens to come forward

The COVID-19 pandemic will be effectively handled only through vaccinations, scientific organisations in the EU and worldwide warn and urge the states to remain on alert and speed up the vaccination programme.

A Health Ministry press release says that the vaccination programme is in progress and aims to protect the population against COVID-19 and the SARS-CoV-2 variants.

It notes that despite the fact that the pandemic is showing a declining trend, as a result of the responsible cooperation of citizens in abiding by measures implemented and the response of the people to get vaccinated, “scientific organisations in the EU and worldwide warn that the pandemic will only be handled effectively through inoculations and urge states to remain on alert and speed up the vaccination rhythm.”

In our country, it added, 59.3% of the population received the first dose by 12 June. In addition 40% completed their vaccination regime either by receiving the single dose of Johnson&Johnson or the two-dose vaccines of AstraZeneca, Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech.

The Ministry of Health reminds that the vaccination portal will remain open until 1730 on Monday for people aged 40+.

From Tuesday, the Portal will be open again to ages 18-39 from 07:30 until Thursday 17 June until 1730. From 18 June, the Portal will be open to people of ages 18+ until all appointment slots are full. The intention of the ministry is to add appointments with the available vaccines as they are received.

All citizens are urged to contribute to the great effort underway to vaccinate as large a percentage of the population as possible, thus shielding the entire society, the Ministry of Health emphasizes.

“Excessive complacency is currently our biggest enemy in the ongoing battle against the virus and could topple the epidemiological picture and delay the safe return to normalcy”, the statement concluded.
