AKEL this year too calls on citizens to participate in the symbolic closing of lights in view of the customary Earth Day. Our support towards the event does not distract us from the real causes of the current environmental degradation and to shift the problem on an individual level.
Last December, the leaders of the world signed in celebratory tones the agreement on climate change, reassuring the world that a solution to the problem of climate change has finally been found. Unfortunately however things are not exactly so, given that the agreement signed is not binding on any country. The global unanimity about the need for a new sustainable path for economies and societies presupposes changes in the practices that cause the problems our planet is facing today.
We point out once again that the environmental issue is primarily a political and economic question. For AKEL, people’s prosperity in an equal society, the preservation of natural resources and the demonstration of the necessary respect for all life forms on the planet are key priorities.
At this critical juncture in human history, the Left represents the political and social force of hope. With the slogan “Earth Day is now” we call on the people to participate in this effort.
Earth Day is an annual event, celebrated on April 22, on which day events worldwide are held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It was first celebrated in 1970, and is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network, and celebrated in more than 192 countries each year
