CYPRIOT ELDERLY AND DISABLED GROUP IN WOOD GREEN

A Haringey day care centre offering individuals an improved quality of life

By Mary Afxentiou

Walking into the premises of the Cypriot Elderly and Disabled Group, located at the Cypriot Community Centre, one encounters a welcoming and friendly atmosphere in which people of all ages enjoy some quality time under the supervision of experienced staff.

Dating back to the 70s, when four elderly people met to have a cup of tea, the project has developed into an established day care service meeting the needs of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots of the Haringey and Enfield areas. However, due to the closure of most of the day care services in North London and in an effort to reduce isolation and help people maintain their skills and independence, the CEDG has now opened its doors to everybody (and from other surrounding boroughs), accepting a diverse range of all ethnicities.

I recently visited the centre and observed the high quality of services offered to our community in a safe and vibrant environment. Talking to our paper, the Service Manager of the CEDG John Constantinou, who has been working closely with the elderly and disabled for the past 32 years, explained how the users benefit from the services offered while they are also kept safe and motivated through a wide range of activities.
