Cypriot Leaders walk in old Nicosia underway

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci are walking the streets of old Nicosia and are talking to bystanders and shop owners.

Mustafa Akinci met President Anastasiades in the buffer zone and they crossed together to the occupied area of Nicosia.

Local and international media are following the two leaders while a euphoric climate is evident as they are making their way towards the Buyuk Han.

After a short walk they are expected to stop to have a coffee.

President Anastasiades and the Turkish Cypriot leader will then go through the crossing point together again and walk the part of Ledras Street in old Nicosia which is under the control of the Republic of Cyprus.

After a short walk they will stop again to have coffee.

They are expected to spent about 45 minutes in each side.

President Anastasiades is accompanied by Government Spokesman Nicos Christodoulides, Nicosia Mayor Constantinos Yiorkadjis and Greek Cypriot negotiator Andreas Mavroyiannis.

Mustafa Akinci is accompanied by his so called spokesman Baris Burcu, Nicosia`s Turkish Cypriot `mayor` Mehmet Harmanci and the Turkish Cypriot negotiator Ozdil Nami.

Cyprus was divided in 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. UN backed talks resumed on May 15 between President Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci aiming to reunify the island under a federal roof.
