Cyprus ranks among the top two countries in Europe, both EU and outside of it, with a two-digit increase in the number of self-employed persons in the period 2013 – early 2014, a UK survey has shown.
According to the specific findings of the report by the British Institute of Public Policy Research (IPPR), there was an increase of 12% in self-employed persons in Cyprus during the 12-month period up to March, bringing their total percentage among the working force to 17%.
The only country ahead of Cyprus is Slovenia with 16% increase, while Bulgaria comes after Cyprus with 10% increase.
In total percentages of self-employed professionals in Europe as they stood in the first quarter of 2014, Cyprus ranks after Greece (32%), Italy (23%) and Poland, Romania and Fyrom (18%).
The IPPR notes that the findings of the research confirm that the culture of self-employment is more widespread in Southern and Eastern Europe by comparison to the West.
Notwithstanding, however, an important increase of 8% in free professionals was recorded in the UK, meaning that one in six working persons in Britain is self-employed.
