The strategic location of Cyprus can contribute to the expansion of Euro-Asian interconnections through maritime transport, Minister of Transport, Communications and Works Marios Demetriades has stressed.
According to an official press release, Demetriades said in his intervention at the 3rd Asia-Europe Transport Ministers` Meeting (ASEM) held in Riga, Latvia, on 29-30 April, that Cyprus as a country that is located at the crossroad of three continents, Europe, Asia and Africa, looks forward to the development of the nine routes defined by the EATL study, stressing that the benefits would be even more significant if these routes could be integrated or connected to the routes of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).
“Cyprus` strategic position at the center of three continents and the proximity to the busy trade routes linking these continents, can substantially contribute to the expansion of these routes through maritime transport”, he said.
The Cypriot Minister referred to the expansion and upgrading of port infrastructure, which are important factors for improving access to the world market and pointed out that Cyprus strongly supports efforts at bilateral, multilateral and international levels, aimed at opening access to the markets.
