On Sunday 9th June 2024, His Grace Bishop Iakovos of Claudiopolis celebrated the Divine Liturgy and preached the sermon at the church of St Barnabas in Wood Green, ahead of the patronal feast of the community. The Hierarchical Divine Liturgy coincided with the annual commemoration of CYPRUS DAY, remembering the tragic and violent events of 1974. This year in fact marks 50 years since the illegal and tragic Turkish invasion of northern Cyprus.
The Divine Liturgy and lunch provided by the community of St Barnabas was graciously attended by the worshipful Madam Mayor Cllr Sue Jameson of Haringey, His excellency Kyriakos Kouros, High Commissioner of the Republic of Cyprus in the United Kingdom, Mr Christos Goulas, the Consul of Greece in London, Mr Bambos Charalambous, MP, Mr Andreas Karaolis, representative of the National Federation of Cypriots in the UK and Archon Marios Minaides, President of the Greek Orthodox Communities of the Archdiocese of Thyateira and Great Britain and Chairman of the Community.
His Grace Bishop Iakovos expressed his gratitude to those present, particularly to the newly elected Madam Mayor Cllr Sue Jameson, to whom he wished a fruitful tenure as mayor of Haringey and expressed the hope for further cooperation for the cultivation of peace and collaboration, joining efforts in fighting against injustice, violence, oppression and occupation.
