Cyprus FM: Our efforts to end Turkey’s occupation can succeed only through close cooperation with Greece

The Foreign Minister of Cyprus Ioannis Kasoulides has informed the National Council of Foreign Affairs of Greece about the course of the ongoing UN led Cyprus peace talks, the progress achieved but also the difficulties that remain ahead.

Speaking after a Council meeting in Athens, Kasoulides recalled that when Greece and Cyprus secured in May 2004 the accession of Cyprus to the EU, they did it thanks to the close cooperation of the governments of the two countries, regardless of which party was in power but also because the Hellenic Parliament stood firm in its decision not to ratify any other accession to the EU, if Cyprus was not included.

So now, he added, the efforts of Cyprus to end Turkey’s occupation can only be concluded successfully through the close and fraternal cooperation with Greece, the Greek government, the Greek people and its representatives.

The Cypriot Foreign Minister thanked his Greek counterpart Nikos Kotzias for the invitation to participate in such an innovative meeting, as he described the session of the National Council of Foreign Affairs where he had the opportunity to inform also the representatives of political parties who are represented in the Hellenic parliament.

Kotzias said that Kasoulides’ opinion and views are always very interesting to listen to and he thanked him for accepting the invitation to participate in the session of the National Council of Foreign Affairs. As Kotzias said “we love Cyprus, it hurts us but it also fills us with hope”.
