Cyprus football review

Omonia’s poor season was capped off with yet another defeat on Sunday with the Nicosia club going down 3-2 at AEL to finish fifth.

Omonia had already lost out on Europe for the first time in 15 years after going down 3-1 to eventual champions APOEL last weekend and they will now look to regroup under new boss Pambos Christodoulou this summer.

Ismael Sassi had given AEL the lead after some good footwork by Marios Elia but Icelandic defender Kari Arnason equalised for Omonia soon after. Youngster Yiannis Gerolemou then grabbed his first senior goal for the club with a neat finish and Marco Soares added a third soon after.

Andreas Katsantonis scored an injury time consolation goal for Omonia with a powerful header.

In other games on Sunday, Ethnikos Achnas snatched an entertaining 4-3 win at Ermis Aradippou with youngster Andreas Elia grabbing a late winner for the visitors while Nassir Maachi hit a hat-trick in a 3-0 win for Nea Salamina at Doxa Katokopia.

Second division bound Karmiotissa signed off from the first division with a 5-1 thrashing of Aris Limassol with Alejandro Barbaro scoring a hat-trick and Stamatis Pantos scoring a brace.

On Saturday, APOEL and Apollon fielded reserve sides in their 2-2 draw with both managers seeking to rest their players for Wednesday’s big Cyprus Coca-Cola Cup final.

APOEL had twice come from behind with goals from Facundo Bertoglio and Igor de Camargo to cancel out goals from Arkadiusz Piech and Ioannis Pittas.

In the only other game on Saturday, a goal from Spanish winger Acoran saw AEK Larnaca beat Anorthosis Famagusta 1-0 and clinch second place.
