Cyprus Foreclosures bill discussion shifts to Parliament

The Government and the political parties are set to continue on Monday the dialogue on the crucial foreclosures bill, at parliamentary level.

Finance Minister Harris Georgiades and the Interior Minister Socratis Hasikos are going to present the bill prepared by the Government, to MPs, during a joint session of the Parliamentary Committees on Financial and Budgetary Affairs and on Internal Affairs, scheduled to convene on Monday morning.

The discussion of the bill shifts to the House after the two Ministers concluded a round of talks they had launched with all parliamentary parties.

The Government believes that at the meeting the parties will clarify their positions regarding the amendments they propose.

“We expect that we will know the position of each party in terms of the amendments they would like to make to the bill” Interior Minister Socratis Hasikos told the press, on Friday.

He added that the Government will inform the Troika about the positions of the parties.

“It doesn`t matter if the Government agrees or disagrees with the proposed amendments. What does matter is Troika`s view of these amendments” he noted.

All parliamentary parties have expressed grave concern about the draft bill, some saying they will not approve it and others that amendments to the bill are of utmost importance.

Troika (EC, ECB and IMF), Cyprus’ international lenders, want the bill approved before the next Eurogroup meeting in mid September
