Government Spokesman Niκos Christodoulides stressed οn Wednesday that Cyprus expects that the EU will send through the European Commission`s progress report on Turkey, a strong message to Ankara for its non compliance with its obligations related to the Republic of Cyprus.
The report, which will be published on the 8th of October, is still being drafted, Christodoulides said, adding that the Cypriot government has been informing during the past year the European Commission about all Turkish actions or statements which do not comply or which are in contrast with Turkey`s obligations as an EU accession country.
“Turkey has a series of obligations to fulfill but unfortunately, especially as regards its obligations for Cyprus, there has been no progress. In this regard we expect that a strict message will be sent (from the Commission)”, Christodoulides pointed out.
He added that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cyprus` Permanent Representation to the EU in Brussels continue to make representations in view of the issuing of the report.
The Republic of Cyprus entered the EU in May 2004. Cyprus is the only EU country which is occupied by a foreign military force, as in 1974 Turkish troops invaded and still occupy 37% of its territory.
