Cyprus Institute is a world-renowned research center, US Secretary of Energy says

United States Secretary of Energy Dr. Ernest Moniz referred to the contribution of the Cyprus Institute (CyI) in developing research and technology.

Speaking during an event in Manhattan, in honor of the Cyprus – US Chamber of Commerce, Moniz, who is also Honorary Trustee of the CyI, also highlighted efforts to turn the Institute into a world-renowned research center, in the fields of energy, water resources and the environment.

Moniz is one of the founding members of the CyI, having contributed in the initial planning, from 2000 to 2002, and the Institute’s operation.

He supported the Institute’s development and was one of the architects for a cooperation agreement with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Moniz also led research efforts for developing Cyprus’ strategies concerning hydrocarbon resources in its exclusive economic zone.

In 2008, he was decorated with the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III by the Cyprus government, for his contribution in the CyI planning.
