Cyprus Minister of Foreign Affairs Ioannis Kasoulides opposed to the imposition of new sanctions against Russia, during the first part of the Informal meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council, which took place in Milan on Friday.
Kasoulides said that the practice of imposing sanctions proved to be ineffective. Having noted that the solution to the Ukrainian crisis can not be military, but political, Kasoulides suggested the EU efforts to focus on mediation procedures aimed at achieving a cease-fire and bringing the two sides to the negotiating table.
According to an official announcement, the Ministers discussed the Southern Neighbourhood and the Eastern Partnership. As regards the Southern Neighbourhood they discussed the recent developments in Iraq and the action of the organisation of Islamic state of Levant and Syria (ISIL).
The Informal meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council wraps up on Saturday with the discussion over the developments on Peace Process in the Middle East
