Cyprus makes démarche to the UN over illegal Turkish movements

Cyprus` Foreign Ministry is making a démarche to the United Nations over illegal movements by Turkey on July 20, during celebrations in the northern Turkish occupied areas of the Republic on the 40th anniversary of the Turkish invasion.

CNA has learned that the FM has made representations to UNFICYP in Nicosia and has instructed Cyprus` Permanent Representative to the UN in New York to make a démarche as well.

The representations are made over violations of Cyprus` airspace and illegal engagement of its national airspace for the arrival of Turkish military aircraft and paratroopers.

On July 20th 1974, following a coup on July 15 that toppled the legally elected government of Cyprus, Turkey invaded and occupied the northern third of Cyprus. Negotiations are currently underway under the UN auspices to reunite the country under a federal roof.
