Motorists caught driving without insurance will have their vehicles taken off the road until they turn up with valid cover as part of a new police traffic squad campaign that began yesterday.
Drivers will either have their vehicles confiscated by the police until they are able to provide proof that they have taken out the necessary insurance or pay for a tow-truck to transport their car home and keep it off the roads until they are properly insured.
Being carried out until and including August 4, the campaign comes in the wake of almost 1,428 drivers caught without insurance over the last four months. Briefing the press on the campaign yesterday, Traffic Police Chief Demetris Demetriou also revealed that an additional 47 uninsured drivers were caught out over the July 27-28 weekend.
The campaign, which will also use promotional material to remind drivers on the importance of being properly insured, is being carried out in co-operation with the Motor Insurers’ Fund of Cyprus.
Fund Permanent Secretary Andreas Charalambides yesterday handed Deputy Chief of Police Andreas Kyriacou a new mobile unit to be used to investigate traffic accidents, including through their re-enactment. The presentation was made after the press briefing on the insurance campaign.
