Cyprus negotiation talks were constructive

The President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades said on Wednesday that he had a constructive meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu, in the framework of UN-led talks for a Cyprus solution.

He added however that he awaits to see Eroglu`s stance at the negotiations` table.

Speaking upon his arrival at the Presidential Palace, after the conclusion of talks, the President was invited to comment on the meeting and referred to the statement that was read out by the UN SG Special Advisor Espen Barth Eide.

He noted that “there has been a constructive discussion” highlighting the need for the two sides “to engage in a substantial dialogue, in order to overturn today`s unacceptable condition”.

Moreover, he went on to say that he awaits to see which stance the Turkish Cypriot leader will assume at the negotiations` table.

Asked if he is optimistic, the President replied that he did not want to make any statements that might be perceived as engaging in a “blame game”.

Cyprus has been divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion. UN-led peace talks are currently underway to find a negotiated settlement that would reunite the country.
