Cyprus Police find 4 coronavirus decree violations out of 1,850 checks

Cyprus Police have said that during Saturday, out of 1,850 checks they conducted four violations were found.

In the meantime, Justice and Public Order Minister George Savvides, who visited yesterday the Limassol police offices, urged everyone to strictly abide by the measures, stressing that it is everyone’s obligation to faithfully follow directions in order to help with the effort to contain the virus outbreak.

“It is important to realise that this is not the time for bravado, nor of ignoring decrees issued, because the enemy is cunning and dangerous,” he stressed.

He further recalled that violation of the decrees carries a prison sentence and a fine, adding that the aim is not to punish people, but that “our foremost obligation is to protect society.”

A police spokesperson told CNA on Sunday morning that in the last 24 hours out of 1,850 checks conducted in various premises only four where found to be in violation of the decrees issued by the Health Ministry and were reported.

Initial measures taken the Cyprus government to contain the Covid-19 outbreak included the closure of schools and a prohibition of gatherings of over 75 people in indoor spaces.

On March 15 the temporary suspension of operation until the end of April of premises such as restaurants, cafeterias, cinemas, theatres, hairdressers, casinos and events halls, was announced. Supermarkets, pharmacies, kiosks and petrol stations were to remain open but to have in place strict measures as to the number of people allowed indoors at any one time.
