Cyprus President greatly disappointed over positions that Tatar expressed during informal meeting in Geneva

Cyprus President, Nicos Anastasiades, expressed on Wednesday evening his great disappointment over the positions which Turkish Cypriot leader, Ersin Tatar, expressed during the 5+1 informal meeting on Cyprus taking place in Geneva

In statements to the media, Anastasiades said that he has told the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, that “our effort is to create a positive climate, without provocations, without referring to the unacceptable things we have heard.”

Moreover he noted that he told the UNSG that “we will submit our positions in writing that will be scientifically substantiated and will not just address things under a political spectrum.”

Anastasiades stressed that “we remain firm to our positions that there needs to be respect for the parameters of the resolutions, the High-Level Agreements, the work that has been produced so far, the statement of November 25, 2019, and certainly the UNSG`s letter of October 26 that says that we must work on the basis of the work that has been produced until today.”

The President noted that deliberations will continue on Thursday at 1000 local time during a new session of the plenary.

Asked if Jane Holl Lute will be appointed as the UNSG`s Special Representative, Anastasiades said that it has not been decided for anyone to be appointed.

Anastasiades made the statements upon his arrival to his hotel from the Palace of the Nations where an extraordinary meeting of the plenary took place on Wednesday evening.

Later on the UNSG hosted a dinner for the parties participating in the informal meeting.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results
