Cyprus Rally to run through buffer zone

At a press conference in the Republic’s capital Nicosia (Thursday), ERC Co-ordinator Jean-Baptiste Ley, Cyprus Automobile Association President Antonis Michaelides and Clerk of the Course Nayia Kontopoulou addressed a number of local media.

It was announced that more than 60 crews would be in action on the mixed-surface event from 19-21 September, including 13 regulars from the ERC and nine from the FIA Middle East Rally Championship, which runs in tandem with the ERC counter.

They will tackle 15 stages over a competitive distance of 232.02 kilometres, including the CNP Asfalistiki Super Special Stage, which uses a mainly asphalt course measuring 5.98 kilometres in length and will “take cars through the so called ‘buffer zone’ in the Turkish-Cypriot district of Nicosia,” according to Michaelides.”

Among the leading entries are ERC aces Craig Breen and Kajetan Kajetanowicz, multiple Cyprus Rally winner Nasser Al-Attiyah, his Middle East championship rival rival Khalid Al-Qassimi, ERC Production Car Cup title chasers Martin Hudec and Vitaliy Pushkar, plus 2013 ERC 2WD champion Zoltán Bessenyey.
