Cyprus ranks 6th in the EU in administration of 1st dose of COVID vaccines

Cyprus ranks 6th in the EU in the administration of the 1st dose of COVID vaccines, the Ministry of Health announced on Sunday, citing figures and data published by the ECDC, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.

According to the figures up until May 8th, the authorities in Cyprus completed 354,264 inoculations, 270,101 (36.5%) were for the 1st dose of the vaccine and 84,163 (11.4%) for the 2nd.

Cyprus` percentage as regards the 1st dose is way higher than the median in the EU (31.3%) whereas the coverage of the population with both doses is at the same level as the median in the EU (11.9%).

The Ministry points out that the figures show that those groups who completed their vaccination scheme have a lower risk to get ill.
According to the figures, the ages 20-59 whose inoculation program is not at the highest levels have a higher risk to get infected than the ages 70-79 and 80+.

It is also pointed out that the citizens who did not get their vaccine are at a higher risk of becoming seriously ill than those who got their shot. The Ministry also said that the vaccination is the only means right now to return to normality and urges citizens to book their appointments
