Cyprus to introduce civil partnerships

Cyprus is bound to introduce civil partnerships for both heterosexual and same-sex couples, with the Minister of Interior Socratis Hasikos announcing on Wednesday that the relevant draft bill has been approved by the Cabinet.

In statements after the Cabinet meeting, in Nicosia, Hasikos said that the draft bill, prepared by his Ministry, aims at creating the legal framework that allows partnership agreements between two people.

A credible source has told CNA that the draft bill provides for both heterosexual and same-sex couples.

According to Hasikos, the relevant legislation is long overdue, because of “well-known reactions”, and covers the existing legislative gap, while responding to social justice issues and to the needs of present times.

The Minister also explained that the draft bill contains a series of provisions, related to the preconditions, the certification and registration of civil partnerships. It also regulates matters concerning children, allowances, property issues and the procedure to dissolve civil partnerships.

Replying to a question, Hasikos said he was certain that the Cypriot society is mature enough to accept civil partnerships. He noted finally that the Church is entitled to retain its disagreement or objection over the matter.
