Deputy Minister to the President of Cyprus, Irene Piki and the Under Secretary of Homeland Security for Strategy, Policy and Plans of the United States, Rob Law, discussed on Monday, issues of regional security and stability, the management of migration challenges, cooperation in law enforcement and intelligence. The two officials also discussed Cyprus’ accession to the U.S. Visa Waiver Program.

According to a statement issued by the Deputy Minister’s Office, Law is visiting Cyprus as part of a broader regional tour, accompanied by the DHS Deputy Under Secretary, John Gountanis.

“Mr. Law’s visit to Cyprus reflects the high level of strategic cooperation between the Republic of Cyprus and the United States, as well as the shared commitment of both countries to further expand their cooperation in areas of mutual interest,” the statement reads.

According to the Deputy Minister’s Office, the meeting highlighted the excellent relations between Cyprus and the United States and their common determination to further strengthen their strategic partnership. Particular emphasis was placed on regional security and stability, migration management, cooperation in law enforcement and intelligence sharing, as well as Cyprus’ broader role as a reliable and predictable partner of the United States in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Within this context, Piki and Law discussed regional developments and the common challenges facing the European Union and the United States, stressing the importance of close coordination among like-minded countries and partners.

The statement also noted that the two sides reviewed the significant progress achieved in recent years in Cyprus-U.S. cooperation on border security, intelligence sharing, and the mobility of citizens.

Regarding Cyprus’ prospective accession to the U.S. Visa Waiver Program, it was reaffirmed that the Republic of Cyprus has completed the required technical criteria, while further consideration of the matter will proceed in accordance with U.S. internal procedures. Both sides emphasized the importance of continuing this cooperation within the framework of the broader strategic relationship between Cyprus and the United States.

According to the statement, the two sides also agreed to further strengthen cooperation and exchange expertise in areas such as the protection of critical infrastructure and countering cyber threats, which, as noted, are becoming increasingly important for the collective security and resilience of states.

Piki reaffirmed the Republic of Cyprus’ commitment to further deepening its strategic cooperation with the United States for the benefit of security, stability, and prosperity in the region.

The statement added that during his stay in Cyprus, Law will also hold meetings with Deputy Minister for Migration and International Protection, Nikolas Ioannides, Foreign Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Theodora Constantinidou, representatives of the Cyprus Police, and other relevant government officials.
