Cyprus Youth (K.L.N) launches campaign to raise money for the Cypriot Community Centre

The Cypriot Community Centre was first established in 1979 by 12 founder organisations, comprising of the main Cypriot organisations (both Greek and Turkish speaking) of Haringey. There are now 15 affiliated member organisations in total. Many other non-affiliated organisations, local authorities, health services, statutory and non-statutory agencies also use the Centres services and facilities.

The Centre continues to provide many services to the community including Meals-On-Wheels, Elderly Day Care, Housing Advice and Dementia Carers Cafe & Support Group, as well as playing host to a whole range of events and activities.

The Cypriot Community Centre, known to many as ‘to Koinotiko’ has been like a mother of the Cypriot community in the UK, fundamentally as a place to socialise and even to keep warm during winter; the lights stay on for 363 days a year, helping countless families throughout its 47-year history.

Although KLN was established in 1952, throughout most of the organisation’s history it has been registered as one of the many organisations at the Centre, teaching dancing to preserve heritage and language to help the assimilation, and also reaching out to the youth, getting them to engage with their ethnic languages. Whilst it was a running, it was an amateur community football team, pre-dating and actually representing Cyprus, and then competing in K.O.P.A, the Cypriot Football league in England.

Most organisations, be it Cypriot inspired or local in nature, have benefited from the Cypriot Community Centre and it is something all organisations should respect, appreciate and get behind and back this campaign to restore and then elevate the Cypriot centre to what it deserves to be – a beacon representing the entire Cypriot Community here in the UK!

KLN have hit the nail on the head with their fundraising title as helping the centre will help countless others.
