Cyprus:5 year old boy buried after being attacked by dog

The public is still in a state of shock following yesterday’s killing of a 5-year-old boy by an Akita dog.

A forensic doctor who carried out a post mortem said he died of shock after the dog bit him in the neck, severing his carotid artery.

He also said he found several other bites on his head, his right hand and back.

Family members said the boy, Aiantas Loizou, had been playing with the dog for more than two hours before being attacked.

He was at the house of friends who had invited his family for an Easter lunch.

A dog expert said Akitas are descents from the wolf family and considered to be amongst dangerous breeds of dogs.

He added that Cypriot legislation prohibits the import of only four breeds of dogs, although Akita is not one.

The dog was put down by veterinary services after the attack on the boy.

The boy’s funeral took place in Larnaca yesterday afternoon.
