Discussions began Tuesday evening at the UN headquarters in New York on the British draft resolution on the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).
CNA has learned that the discussions are taking place in a good atmosphere and various proposals have been put forward by both permanent and non-permanent members of the UN SC. It is expected that there will be an agreement on the draft by Friday.
The discussions will be renewed Thursday when UNSG Special Representative in Cyprus Lisa Buttenheim will brief the SC members via a teleconference.
The meeting to adopt the resolution has been set for July 30.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. The latest UN-led round of peace talks began in February this year with a view to finding a negotiated settlement to reunite the country.
