Efforts to establish a regular passenger ferry line between Cyprus and Greece

Efforts are underway to establish a regular passenger ferry line between Cyprus and Greece, Minister of Communications Tasos Mitsopoulos confirmed.
Speaking to the media following a meeting with Green party MP George Perdikis, Mitsopoulos said a ferry to Greece would have many benefits for Cyprus which is an isolated island in the eastern Mediterranean.
“This matter is an absolute priority for us and one that we frequently discuss with Greece’s Department of Merchant Shipping.”
The minister added that Cyprus on its own is not able to establish a ferry line which is why the ministry is currently trying in talks with the European Commission in attempt to secure funds.
“We are examining every possibility and evaluating our economic resources,” said Mitsopoulos. We do consider that a ferry to Greece would boost Cyprus’ tourism and increase the possibility of exporting products to the Greek and European markets.”
He added that because there is no regular passenger ferry to Cyprus from Greece transportation fees remain excessive, which is something the ministry has been concerned with for years.
Perdikis agreed that a ferry would be extremely beneficial for the tourist and agricultural industries of both Cyprus and Greece.
“The ministry is systematically examining the possibility of connecting Cyprus to Greece via a ferry and we consider that it would have huge economic benefits.”
He added that the Green Party is cooperating with the Ministry of Communications in an attempt to make the ferry a possibility in the near future.
“The aim is to offer Cypriots and foreign tourists another means of transport to and from the island.”
