Electricity Authority of Cyprus continues to supply electricity to the Turkish Cypriots

The Electricity Authority of Cyprus will continue to supply with electricity the northern Turkish occupied areas of the Republic of Cyprus, until tomorrow 4th of February, according to a second agreement between the EAC and a natural person who is connected with the Turkish Cypriot competent “authority”, EAC spokesperson, Christina Papadopoulou has told CNA.

The first contract covering the period between 1st of January until 15th of the same month has been signed and the fee stands at 50,000, including VAT and tax for RES. The government has rejected a request by the Turkish Cypriots to be exempt from these taxes, Papadopoulou explained.

She also noted that Turkish Cypriots are charged as any EAC customer would normally be charged, adding that “no special arrangement has been made”.

So far there is no new request to continue the connection, she said. If there is a new request, it will be examined by the relevant state authorities and if approved, the EAC will continue to provide electricity power to the Turkish Cypriot community, according to its needs, Papadopoulou explained.

The EAC has been providing power to the Turkish Cypriots since the beginning of the year. The second contract covers the period 16 /1 – 4/2/2016 and it will be signed within days and the appropriate fee will be charged, she concluded.
