A Enfield man, Wednesday, 17 December, appeared on bail at Westminster Magistrates’ Court charged as below.
He has been released on conditional bail to appear at Southwark Crown Court on 31 December 2014.
Charges are as follows:
Count 1 – cruelty to a person under 16 years, contrary to section 1(1) of the Children and Young Persons Act 1933.
Aravindan Balakrishnan between the 6th day of January 1983 and the 7th day of January 1999 being a person who had attained the age of 16 years and having the responsibility for a child under that age, wilfully ill-treated, assaulted, and neglected the said child, in a manner likely to cause unnecessary suffering to the said child or injury to its health.
Count 2 – false imprisonment.
Aravindan Balakrishnan between the 6th day of January 1999 and the 26th day of October 2013 unlawfully and injuriously imprisoned a woman and detained her against her will.
Count 3 – indecent assault, contrary to section 14(1) of the Sexual Offences Act 1956.
Aravindan Balakrishnan on a day between the 1st of January 1980 and the 31st day of December 1983 indecently assaulted a woman.
Count 4 – indecent assault, contrary to section 14(1) of the Sexual Offences Act 1956.
Aravindan Balakrishnan on a day between the 1st of January 1980 and the 31st day of December 1983 on an occasion other than that alleged in count 3 indecently assaulted a woman.
Count 5 – rape, contrary to section 1(1) of the Sexual Offences Act 1956.
Aravindan Balakrishnan on a day between the 1st of January 1980 and the 31st day of December 1983 had sexual intercourse with a woman who at the time of the said intercourse did not consent to it, the said Aravindan Balakrishnan either knowing that a woman did not so consent or being reckless as to whether she so consented.
Count 6 – indecent assault, contrary to section 14(1) of the Sexual Offences Act 1956.
Aravindan Balakrishnan on a day between the 1st of January 1980 and the 31st day of December 1983 on an occasion other than that alleged in counts 3 and 4 indecently assaulted a woman.
Count 7 – indecent assault, contrary to section 14(1) of the Sexual Offences Act 1956.
Aravindan Balakrishnan on a day between the 1st of January 1984 and the 31st day of December 1984 indecently assaulted a woman.
Count 8 – indecent assault, contrary to section 14(1) of the Sexual Offences Act 1956.
Aravindan Balakrishnan on a day between the 1st of January 1985 and the 31st day of December 1985 indecently assaulted a woman.
Count 9 – indecent assault, contrary to section 14(1) of the Sexual Offences Act 1956.
Aravindan Balakrishnan on a day between the 1st of January 1986 and the 31st day of December 1986 indecently assaulted a woman.
Count 10 – indecent assault, contrary to section 14(1) of the Sexual Offences Act 1956.
Aravindan Balakrishnan on a day between the 1st of January 1987 and the 31st day of December 1987 indecently assaulted a woman.
Count 11 – indecent assault, contrary to section 14(1) of the Sexual Offences Act 1956.
Aravindan Balakrishnan on a day between the 1st of January 1988 and the 31st day of December 1988 indecently assaulted a woman.
Count 12 – indecent assault, contrary to section 14(1) of the Sexual Offences Act 1956.
Aravindan Balakrishnan on a day between the 1st of January 1989 and the 31st day of December 1989 indecently assaulted a woman.
Count 13 – indecent assault, contrary to section 14(1) of the Sexual Offences Act 1956.

Count 14 – indecent assault, contrary to section 14(1) of the Sexual Offences Act 1956.
