EPP condemns Turkish persistence on guarantee & intervention rights, calls to stop harassing the enclaved Greek Cypriots

The European Peoples` Party officially blames Turkey on the outcome of the Crans Montana talks, condemns the Turkish persistence on guarantee and intervention rights in Cyprus and call upon Turkey to comply immediately with the approach of the UN Secretary General and EU principles and values. The EPP leaders convened today in Brussels to coordinate their common stance ahead of the EU Summit.

The European Peoples` Party was briefed by the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades regarding the unfortunate outcome of the Crans Montana Conference on Cyprus.

Later in an official statement the EPP expressed its disappointment that the Crans Montana Conference on Cyprus failed to reach a comprehensive settlement on the Cyprus issue due to Turkey`s insistance for maintaining guarantee and intervention rights in Cyprus, and the continuation of the presence of Turkish military trops in Cyprus.

The EPP calls on Turkey to comply immediately with the approach of the UNSG and the EU principles and values, and constructively work for the comprehensive solution of the Cyprus problem.

On the same statement The EPP was also informed of the recent measures imposed by Turkey against the enclaved Greek Cypriots and Maronites, and calls on Turkey to withdraw these measures immediately and refrain from actions that are clear violation of human rights.
