Equipment given to Cypriot towns for waste disposal

The Department of Environment of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment has presented the Municipality of Larnaca with equipment in the framework of the European programme for the reduction of municipal solid waste produced by coastal hotel units and nearby waste producing establishments.

In a written statement, the Municipality says machinery for the separate collection of plastic, glass and metal packaging was placed at a point along the Mackenzie beach in Larnaca.

It is expected that further equipment, including compactors, balers, pruning shredders, rubbish collection trucks, and underground bins, will be received by the Municipality soon.

The Municipality of Ayia Napa has received machinery for the collection of plastic, metal and glass packaging, from the Department of Environment of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment.

In a written statement, the Municipality of Ayia Napa says the equipment was received by Ayia Napa Mayor Yiannis Karousos, in the presence of various officials.

The machinery has been placed at a point within the port area, near a school, and is part of the equipment installed in the framework of the programme for the reduction of solid waste produced by coastal hotel units and nearby waste producing establishments, implemented by the Department of Environment.

During the ceremony, Karousos himself tried out the equipment.

Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Nicos Kouyialis has handed over to the Municipality of Paralimni recycling equipment, including seven recycling centres for metal, plastic and glass packaging.

The machinery was received by Paralimni Mayor Theodoros Pyrillis and was placed along the coastal front of the Municipality.

In a written statement, the Municipality of Paralimni notes that the equipment was received in the framework of the broader recycling programme implemented by the Department of Environment for the reduction of municipal solid waste produced by coastal hotel units and nearby waste producing establishments, and is funded by the European Union.

These recycling centres are considered to be pioneering because, apart from automatically receiving, recognising, separating, and storing recyclable waste, they give incentives to recyclers.

According to the press release, the Municipality also stands to benefit, as it will have material ready for further processing in industry and will sell it at a price to be determined through tenders.

Furthermore, the machinery also automatically receives empty metal, plastic and glass packaging, in a special crucible with a capacity of 40 packages per minute. The packaging is recognised and separated with the use of sensors. The waste is then compressed or shredded with special machinery, reducing its volume by up to 90%.

The press release notes that there are incentives for citizens regarding returnable glass, plastic and metal packaging, taken for recycling. The consumer has two options, either to press the green button to receive a receipt with the total value of the recyclable material or to press the yellow button and donate the proceeds to a charity of his/her choice.
