EU should no longer tolerate Turkish troops in Cyprus

President of the House of Representatives Yiannakis Omirou has stressed that the Republic of Cyprus can and should not remain the only divided country in Europe.

In a message for the anniversary of the national day of the 28th of October 1940, Omirou notes that Europe should no longer tolerate the presence of foreign Turkish troops in Cyprus, which is one of its member states since May 2004.

The legacy of the 28th of October dictates that we have to struggle to give an end to the occupation of our country, and to achieve the unity of our state, our people, our institutions and our economy, Omirou stresses.

Omirou also sent a message to his Greek counterpart for the national day of the 28th of October, in which he states that the Cypriot Hellenism sees the common path of Greece and Cyprus which includes the protection of their national interests and a solution of the Cyprus problem that would give an end to the Turkish occupation and that would safeguard human rights and freedoms on the basis of the international and European principles.

The Republic of Cyprus, an EU member state since 2004, is divided since 1974 by Turkish troops. Turkey still occupies 37% of Cyprus` territory.
