EU-Turkey to investigate prison with Cyprus missing persons

President of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament, Elmar Brok, has called on Turkey to provide information as to whether the remains found in the grounds of Diyarbakir prison belong to Greek Cypriots missing since the 1974 Turkish invasion.

Following an intervention by activist and MEP Eleni Theocharous, Brok has sent a letter to the Permanent Representative of Turkey in Brussels, urging him to provide information and carry out an investigation of the issue following the discovery of the 38 skeletons in the Diyarbakir grounds.

According to a press release from Theocharous’ office, Brok is asking the permanent representative to investigate the conditions of death, the origin of the dead and information on the investigation currently underway.

Brok said that the Cypriot MEP told the Foreign Affairs Committee that the remains might belong to Greek Cypriots as more than 200 prisoners of war were transferred to Diyarbakir after the Turkish invasion of 1974. She also pointed out the significance of gathering as much information as possible
