The positive outcomes of a European Commission review of the work done so far by the Pafos2017 European Capital of Culture organisation were presented on Tuesday in Nicosia.
Addressing a press conference Minister of Education and Culture Costas Cadis said the review shows that the programme so far makes the most of possible synergies with education and culture.
It is of equal importance that the history and rich cultural heritage of the city of Paphos is presented dating back to ancient times while at the same time highlighting the inter-cultural dimension of its modern civilisation.
The choice of the slogan “Connecting Continents, Bridging Civilisations” has been quite aptly made for the thematic programme of cultural actions, he pointed out.
The Education Minister further reiterated that the government supports in practice the programme, which will receive state funding of €5 million.
On his part, President of the Pafos2017 organisation Christos Patsalides said that the Commission experts` report points out that since Paphos is the smallest in size city to ever undertake the role, it can from now on be used as a best practice example for other European small cities. This he noted honours Paphos and Cyprus as a whole.
