Famagusta back on the agenda

Famagusta is back on the Cyprus problem agenda, as President Anastasiades is expected on Wednesday to set the government’s plan for the return of the fenced city in motion.
Nicosia is working on a proposal it plans to put to the United Nations and the European Union, encouraged by the support of Russia, France and China who see it as bringing new momentum to the deadlocked process.
The National Council is expected to flesh out the proposal in mid-July, while the fate of the fenced city will figure in talks between Anastasiades and EU Council President Herman von Rompuy in Brussels on Wednesday.
It is unclear how Turkey, which has in the past linked Famagusta with the opening of the illegal airport at Tymbou, will react.
It is unclear how Prime Minister Tayyip Recep Erdogan, who is under pressure at home with EU heavyweights such as Germany moving to block the revival of its accession talks because of his heavy handed crack down on demonstrators, will react to any exploratory contacts.
