Rekindling fires were contained in the mountainous area of Limassol, according to the Fire Service spokesperson, Andreas Kettis, adding that five aerial firefighting units have been operating since early Friday to assist in the effort.
“In the course of the night, small flare-ups were managed despite existing challenges near the communities of Pano Kivides, Alassa, Zanakia, and Omodos,” Kettis posted on “X”.
He also underlined the crucial contribution of unmanned aerial vehicles from the National Guard, which patrolled and mapped the fire.
In the early hours, five aerial firefighting aircraft took off to conduct perimeter drops over the fire for better containment or where evaluation deemed necessary.
Last night, two Israeli C-130 aircraft carried out drops of fire retardant to stabilise the boundaries of the blaze, the spokesperson added.
Winds are expected to gradually increase again today, he said while firefighting forces remain in their positions and adjust their movements as needed.
Kettis stated that the Chief Fire Officer is heading to the coordination center to oversee operations.
Spokesperson of the Forestry Department, George Constantinou told CNA that there is always for the fire to rekindle in the areas however “we remain in the area to prevent the possibility of a re-ignition, which could develop into a wildfire”.
