Footballer Dies After Collapsing During Match

A non-league footballer has died after collapsing during a pre-season friendly match.

Junior Dian, 24, fell down during the second half as he played for Ryman Premier League side Tonbridge Angels at Whyteleafe FC in Surrey on Tuesday night.

Two physios and two paramedics attempted to revive him, but the trialist was declared dead at St George’s Hospital in Tooting, London, early on Wednesday morning.

The match was abandoned after Mr Dian collapsed.

Flowers have been laid at Tonbridge Angels’ ground and the club’s flag was flown at half mast.

The Kent-based club’s chairman, Steve Churcher, said: “This is devastating news and our only crumb of comfort is that Junior lost his life doing something he obviously enjoyed so much.

“All our thoughts and sympathies are with his family.

“Also, I would like to thank everyone at Whyteleafe FC for their support and professionalism during this very distressing incident yesterday evening.”

Twitter users, including ex-Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp, have posted messages of condolence on the site.

He wrote: “Terrible news about Junior Dian who died playing football. Sending my thoughts to his family.”

Another person wrote: “Never want to hear news like that R.I.P Junior Dian. My thoughts are prayers go out to his family.”

A third added: “2 days ago we was together enjoying life and now you’re gone, see me grow up from a lil kid to now R.I.P Junior Dian.”

Tonbridge Angels said this weekend’s match against Gillingham FC would be dedicated to Mr Dian and there would also be a one-minute’s applause.

The club said: “Junior was associated with the club for only a very short time but in that time he became part of the Angels family and it is therefore right that we are all able to pay our respects to this young footballer who sadly is no longer with us.”
