Former Turkish President Abdullah Gul says the Cyprus problem definitely has to be solved.
“The Cyprus Problem is a very important issue for Turkey. There has to be a settlement, but our European friends also have to take on their share of responsibility within the EU.”
Gul stressed there are economic incentives for the whole Eastern Mediterranean in finding a solution to the Cyprus Problem, in addition to the security concerns.
Gul, who spoke to Financial Times on Wednesday, also said Turkey needs a stronger parliamentary system, not a more powerful presidency.
“I have always said the parliamentary system should be enhanced, it should be perfected,” said Gul.
Gul’s statement is quite different from his successor’s position, President Tayyip Erdogan, who is making moves to give more executive power to the presidency.
