George Clooney calls for the return of the Parthenon Marbles to Greece

George Clooney has once again voiced his support for returning the 2,500-year-old Parthenon Marbles to Greece. His comments have stoked the long-standing debate over reunification of the works, which have been housed at the British Museum in London since the early 17th century.
The Hollywood actor told Janet Suzman, chairwoman of the British Committee for the Reunification of the Parthenon Sculptures: “There are indeed many objects of historical value that must be returned to their original owners. However, none of them is as important as the Marbles of the Parthenon.”
He called on Britain to allow their permanent reunion in their birthplace. “The Parthenon Sculptures must be returned to their original owner,” he said.
In a recent interview with British Sunday paper Observer, Clooney revealed how discussions he had with his wife Amal Alamuddin on the fate of the Parthenon Marbles, while they were still dating, helped forge a strong bond between them. Alamuddin, a human rights lawyer, was acting for the government of Greece in support of their return from the British Museum.
