The German Oncology Center, officially opened it gates on Friday, in Ayios Athanassios, Limassol, aiming to offer quality but also unique services to the entire island.
It is the first oncology centre to open in Limassol which will mean that cancer patients from Pafos and Limassol will no longer have to make to long trip to Nicosia for treatment.
The center is in contact with the Ministry of Health in order to offer services for cancer patients in the two districts, its President, a former Finance Minister, Kikis Kazamias said during a press conference.
Kazamias assured that the centre’s operation will not be competitive but rather complimentary and recalled that the cost of treatment for about 80% of cancer patients in Cyprus is covered by the state.
He said that the new centre will offer the government the opportunity for a financially beneficial cooperation given that until today it has not been possible to create a radiotherapy unit at the Limassol General Hospital, the operation of which would cost tens of millions of euros.
The state can establish a radiotherapy unit at Limassol General Hospital in some years, however, our existence constitutes a reality today, something which should be taken seriously under consideration for the sake of patients, oncologist Nicolaos Zamboglu and visionary behind the centre said.
He further noted that the German Oncology Centre has in its disposal the technology to diagnose patients who would otherwise have to go abroad such as the PET/CT scan.
