Girl Gone Greek, a novel depicting life in a Greek coastal village, has won Best Screenplay at the 2020 Santorini Film Festival. The first international, independent film festival on the Greek island, took place on 15 August at Cinema Kamari.
Girl Gone Greek is based on author Rebecca Hall’s travel memoir and brings iconic scenes to life in a present day setting.
She commented: “With another film festival award under its belt, I really do feel ‘Girl Gone Greek’ is starting to make headway, and certainly do hope my travel memoir turned script about life in a Greek village and its eccentricities, can come to fruition on screen.”
Rebecca, who originally hailed from the UK, arrived years ago in a small coastal town in Greece as an English language teacher. But after too much finger-pointing was directed at Greece during the 2008 global economic crisis, she decided to help her adopted country.
She sought to portray the life, people and culture of her new home and wrote the fictionalized account of her life in the village so that readers might have the opportunity to see the real Greece.
In addition to winning Best Screenplay at the 2020 Santorini Film Festival, in 2019 Girl Gone Greek received recognition as a finalist in the script category at the North European Film Festival and was the Official Selection at the International Filmmaker Awards, London for the Best Unproduced Script.
In 2018, the novel was named Winner of Best Feature Fiction Script at the London Greek Film Festival and received an Honourable Mention at the Los Angeles Movie Awards.
