Government officials and trade union representatives mark Labour Day on Friday, with statements and events held in various cities across Cyprus.
The Government remains fully committed to supporting our workers and pensioners by adopting policies that strengthen social cohesion and ensure a stable and reliable social protection system, said President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides in a written statement.
As he noted, from the moment it took office, the Government moved to increase the minimum wage from €940 in 2023, following the first six months of employment, to €1,088 in 2026, representing a 13.6% increase, as well as an increase in disposable income for approximately 200,000 workers, through the tax reform it promoted and enacted from January 1, 2026.
He added that there was also a cumulative increase during the 2023–2025 period in the base portion of pensions by approximately 10%, while at the same time, due to responsible fiscal policy and high economic growth, according to recent data from the Statistical Service, the median gross monthly earnings of employees increased successively in 2024 and 2025 by 5% and 4.6%, respectively.
The Republic of Cyprus remains fully aligned with the European agenda for the future of work, aiming to better regulate labour relations, strengthen collective bargaining, and ensure adequate wages, said Minister of Labour and Social Insurance Marinos Mousiouttas on Friday, in his remarks at an event organized by SEK for Labour Day, in Nicosia.
Describing pension reform as the “government’s top priority for 2026,” he said that social dialogue on the reform is already in full swing, adding that the relevant bills are expected to be submitted to Parliament in June 2026, with the aim of implementing the new system starting January 1, 2027.
Later in the afternoon, trade unions from both communities, including PEO and Turkish Cypriot unions, are organizing a joint event at Eleftheria Square, featuring speeches and a march that will end at the buffer zone, where a cultural program will take place. Labour Day events began on Thursday with DEOK’s dedicated event.
