Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot parties discussed developments in the region and the effects on Cyprus solution

The latest economic and political developments in the region and their effects on the solution of the Cyprus problem was the topic discussed Wednesday between leaders and representatives of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political parties who meet regularly at Ledra Palace under the aegis of the Slovak Embassy.

The Ambassador of Slovakia Oksana Tomova read a joint communique after the meeting according to which the leaders and representatives expressed opinions in a very constructive way and friendly atmosphere.

The issue of today`s meeting was proposed by the hosting T/c party, “United Cyprus Party”.

The statements also says that the parties reiterated their will to continue to work together towards reaching a solution of the Cyprus problem as soon as possible.

The next regular meeting will be held in January and the date will be announced in due time.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied the island`s northern third. Numerous rounds of UN-backed talks to reunite the island under a federal roof have failed to yield results.

Recently, Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades decided to suspend his participation in settlement talks, following Turkey`s provocative acts in the island`s exclusive economic zone.

Turkish seismic exploration vessel Barbaros entered Cyprus` Exclusive Economic Zone in October, a few days after Turkey had issued an illegal maritime order (NAVTEX) for the area.
