Haringey Borough travelled to east London for a vital relegation battle against Barkingside and came away with three precious points. The one goal they scored belied the possession Haringey had and it should have been three, four or even a five goal margin!
Three wins in the last four league games have lifted Borough up to nineteenth, from the twenty-third position they held just three weeks ago. Due to Christmas and suspensions Tom Loizou (Haringey’s manager) rang the changes. Only five players who started last time out v Soham started this match.
Haringey started the brighter and after a poor clearance by Barkingside’s goalkeeper, Dean Fenton, playing right wing had a one on one but the goalie redeemed himself. A few minutes later Anthony McDonald had a goal bound shot saved by the keeper low to his left.
Barkingside’s only real effort came just after when Mikhel Kharshiladze (Borough’s keeper) kept out a goal bound effort with a flying save to his left.
Ishmail Kamara then had two clear cut chances to open the scoring but the ball wouldn’t settle for him when in the penalty area and was scrambled out for a corner, which when crossed into the box he flashed over from close range.
One more chance before half-time fell to Haringey’s Dewayne Clarke, but he blazed his effort over the bar after his first shot was saved by the keeper.
The breakthrough came five minutes into the second half. The ball was played down the right wing and then into Barkingside’s penalty area, where Kamara, Haringey’s number ten planted the ball into the net between keeper and post.
Haringey Borough had majority of the play in the second half but couldn’t find the net and when they did, the assistant referee deemed it offside.
Both Fenton and Kamara had chances to put the game beyond Barkingside’s reach, but their goalkeeper was playing a blinder and saved both at point blank range.
Barkingside had the last word through. In time added on they attacked down the right, reached the bye line and pulled the ball back to their number nine who somehow managed to send it wide.
After Aveley this Saturday (2nd Jan) weather permitting, Borough face three long away trips, to Derham Town (5th Jan), Bury Town (9th Jan) and Witham Town (16th Jan), hoping their fine run of form continues.
