With the remains of storm Abigail hitting the mainland, albeit a little south of Scotland, Haringey Borough played Hitchin Town, in another Ryman League One North v Evo-Stik Southern Premier tie. On a very wet pitch that was being worked on right up until kick-off with a 50-50 chance of the game being called off, the referee waited and passed the ground fit to play, much to the relief of all those present.
Apart from Rakim Richards returning to right back and Dewayne Clarke arriving on time, it was the same team that played in Tuesday’s win versus Redbridge.
The first twenty minutes or so both teams were coming to terms with the conditions and pot shots were had, with the closest falling to Hitchin’s number 11 which Ashley Harris in the Boro’s goal gathered.
For the next ten minutes Haringey were under pressure and again Harris saved smartly from Hitchin’s number seven. Two other chances fell for Hitchin’s forwards which narrowly flashed passed the post.
On thirty-two minutes the best chance so far for Haringey. A right sided corner was whipped over by Anthony McDonald and Ishmail Kamara directed his header goal bound only to see a Hitchin defender on the goal line clear it.
The second half started with Haringey’s manager in the stand after a disagreement with the referee at half-time and for the next twenty minutes or so they did not resemble a team at the bottom of the League. They played with belief and after a minor scare took the lead on fifty seven minutes. A cross by McDonald from the left was missed by the Hitchin defenders and the ball reached Daniel Aristidou and from ten yards out, he side footed into the corner of the net to make it 1-0.
Three minutes later it should have been 2-0. A run by Kamara into the box resulted in him being bundled over and the ref having no choice but to award the penalty. Griffiths placed the ball and taking three steps placed the ball to the goalkeeper’s right but the keeper guessed correctly and made a save.
An Aristidou cross on sixty five minutes was fumbled by the Hitchin keeper but was cleared before the Boro forwards could react.
Then on sixty-nine minutes Hitchin scored. A run by Town’s right-back who whipped the ball in, was met by Haringey’s number 5 Aaron Scott who’s header flashed passed Harris, to make it 1-1.
The game settled with midfield seeing the most action but on eight-seven minutes Haringey could have won the game. A Rakim Richards through ball into the box reached Griffiths who passed three Hitchin defenders but his shot was saved by the keeper and the ball scrambled away.
