Walking enthusiasts stepped out in Haringey to try their hands (and feet) at Nordic walking in preparation for a special weekend of walks.
The unique walking technique which uses poles resembling ski sticks was one of a range of activities held at Lordship Recreation Ground on Saturday 3 September to promote a major walking weekend that is coming up to encourage people to get active and explore their borough.
You can take part in one of 20 special walks that are organised on 1 and 2 October, from exploring Alexandra Palace through to finding out about the ancient wells of Muswell Hill, or hearing about North Tottenham’s heritage restoration to enjoying Tottenham Marshes and the New River. The Walks also act as a great opportunity to enjoy Haringey’s award winning parks.
It’s all part of Haringey’s Year of Walking which aims to encourage people to enjoy what is the simplest, cheapest, most sociable and enjoyable way to be active.
The event on Saturday also served to thank walk leaders and volunteers and to launch the walking weekend brochure and a new 36 page walking booklet ‘Walking Haringey’.
Cabinet Member for the Environment, Councillor Peray Ahmet, who attended the event said: “We are encouraging residents to take up walking as a fun, easy and free way to exercise, while also enjoying some of the impressive – and often award winning – open spaces that our borough boasts.”
