HRISTOS ANESTI !

Happy Easter to all, or rather CRISTOS ANESTH meaning that Christ Is Risen and we will continue to do so for the next 36 days! As 40 days of fasting meets 40 days of celebration, culminating in the 36th Cypriot Wine Festival & Business Expo!

Mobile networks and social media apps and sites are flooded with Easter wishes and as these celebratory messages and pictures of food, glorious food, are flying from phone to phone, one can’t help but notice that there’s somewhat of an inconsistency in the way in which we send our wishes.

The culprit and what has been confusing from an early age is growing up with the many ways Greek to English and vice-versa has been translated from the generation before and so on and so forth. This is especially the case when we consider the most people in the Cypriot community communicate in a Cypriot dialect what makes matters more confusing is that the Cypriot dialect has then been adapted to British Cypriots, where words have been fused and mingled to create a composite branch of the dialect.

The reason for all the confusion is the fact that the translation between the two languages was never standardised. The keyboard uses the ‘C’ in place of the ‘X’ – if we take the translation of the Greek in the immediate conversion of each letter than it will look something like this CPISTOS ANESTH, which kind of makes sense in capital letters but does not have the same clarity in lowercase letters. Cpistos Avesth.

The general, consensus is that ‘C’ equals ‘CH’ hence the translations for Jesus Christ being Iesous Christos. Obviously, it is difficult to have keyboards to accommodate the one letter representing two, however it does not have to be that complex. Let’s take probably the most common surname ‘Charalambous’ the ‘Ch’ sound is incorrect, and the name should simply begin Hara…. meaning joy, and actually having a similar sound to the Greek pronunciation ‘Cara’ thus Christos should simply have been Hristos. What most tend to write is Xristos Anesti but if you are using the English Greek representation of the characters then it should be written Xpistos Avesth and in capitals XPISTOS ANESTH but this is not the case, there is clearly an inconsistency.

CyWineFest is the largest Cypriot event outside of Cyprus and because we deal with Cyprus, and Greece for that matter, quite often the translational dilemmas occur. We are sure that many people in the community and indeed outside either dealing with Cypriots and Greeks also have administrative complications. Names and products for example can be spelt in a multitude of ways such as wine/region, Commandaria, this uniquely Cypriot wine has left many confused at how its should be translated in Greek as it’s etymology was not originally Greek thus Koumantaria,Komantaria,Koumandaria/Koumataria, Komantaria, Koumandaria are examples of how many different spellings this most ancient and of course ecclesiastical of wines, still used in Holy Communion today!

Great Lent ended in the celebration of the resurrection of Christ and marked for many, the resumption of their culinary lives, the quite drastic transition from vegan to fully fledged carnivore! As we prepare for CyWineFest in just over 40 days’ time, there will be plenty to feast on to put an end to those cravings!
