Hundreds of AKEL and the Left’s Movement volunteers assisted in the restoration of the surrounding environment in affected areas.
Today, with the participation of over 300 volunteers, AKEL and the Left’s Movement carried out a mission as a practical expression of our solidarity with the communities affected by the recent devastating fire. The effort focused on cleaning and restoring the surrounding areas within the communities of Souni–Zanatzia, Malia, Vouni, and Potamiou. Volunteer work is yet another meaningful way to support the people of mountainous Limassol who have been facing this tragedy in recent days.
The initiative followed a visit by a party delegation, led by General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou, last Wednesday. During that visit, the complex problems caused by the major environmental, economic, and cultural destruction from the fire were recorded. We committed to exerting all necessary pressure, both inside and outside Parliament, to ensure that the government and the state as a whole act swiftly to support the residents and fully restore the fire-stricken communities.
Next Tuesday, August 5, at AKEL’s initiative, a joint session of the Parliamentary Committees on Interior, Environment, and Agriculture will discuss how and why this massive disaster occurred. Within the framework of parliamentary oversight, responsibilities will be sought—responsibilities which, for the time being, no one in the government seems willing to assume. Oversight will also be exercised over the implementation of government announcements to support the affected communities, and discussions will take place on what further actions are required from the state.
