Islington Grow Show brings around 1,000 people to Caledonian Park

Around 1,000 people attended the third Islington Grow Show at Caledonian Park in September to celebrate food growing, gardening and community.

Residents displayed home-grown fruit, vegetables, herbs and flowers alongside homemade produce. First-time growers were among those taking part, with displays including tomatoes, peppers, chillies and edible flowers.

Visitors joined gardening workshops, tree walks and activities exploring food growing and wildlife habitats. Black Rootz, the Vertical Veg Man and Sustainable Nutrition Academy were among the contributors, while Mbilla Arts led African drumming sessions.

A shared community lunch was prepared by Chauntelle Lewis, founder of The Barefoot Planter, and Migrateful chef Tina Nito, using donated food.

Councillor Ruth Hayes, Islington’s executive member for health and social care, praised the event for bringing people together and celebrating growers working in spaces ranging from window boxes to community gardens.

Lewis highlighted the challenges of gardening during dry weather and the importance of reducing food waste and supporting local farmers.
